Roses, sax, and “Tadow:” Grammy-nominated Masego brought an absolutely captivating show to Boston’s House of Blues on August 26 in a night that can only be described as a “true showcase of musical talent and artistry.”
Opening the night was Laken, a Nigerian-American R&B singer best known for his song “Make It Right.” This set was his third time performing in Boston this year alone. His performance was slow and deeply personal, and a grin was ever-present on his face as both the crowd and artist connected through music.
However, when the lights dimmed and Masego’s fully-carpeted stage came into view, the room changed completely. With the stage now bathed in warm yellow, orange, and red lighting, silk drapes, and freshly polished silver instruments, House of Blues was transported into a new world entirely. The Grammy nominee began his set with “Wonderwoman,” a song off his latest album, Fix Your Face. It didn’t take long before Masego began to show off his multitude of musical talents, going on to play the keys as well as the saxophone throughout the set.
Masego’s performance of “Tadow,” however, is what truly tied the show together perfectly. He brought his sax out one last time to pour his final bursts of soul energy into the performance of his most well-known song. Its smooth sax solo and almost trance-like synth progression, which trended as a sound on social media back in 2020 into early 2021, were now live for Boston to reminisce. Five years later, the crowd still knew every word.
