“Here Before,” Somerville-based band Waldo’s first official musical statement, feels nostalgic to say the least. Several years ago, indie pop — or at least the part of it characterized by lightly distorted guitars, clear vocals, and clean, catchy hooks — ruled the world of new music. Recently, at Sound of Boston, we’ve been hearing some excellent music from electronic artists and rock artists but nothing like the bluesy, sing-along music of Waldo.
Although they’ve waited until now to release their debut single, Waldo has played over 25 shows throughout New England. Just last spring, they opened for Flosstradamus, The New Pornographers, and Childish Gambino at Tufts University’s annual Spring Fling concert. They’ve also maintained quite the reputation for small house shows. My first foray into the world of Waldo was when they championed Tufts’ Battle of the Bands. They transformed the energy of the crowd, and their drummer Jonathan Gilad played the entire set with just one hand.
