Rapper, gospel singer, classically trained flautist, feminist, and black rights activist Lizzo has proven herself to be anything but a typical artist on the rise. She’s using her platform to transform people’s attitudes toward political and social issues. To accomplish this, she is spreading nothing but feel-good positivity and inclusivity.
Lizzo spent most of her adolescent years in Houston, where she experimented with R&B and hip-hop. When she moved to Minneapolis in 2011, however, her music style flourished into what it is today: clever raps intertwined with vibrant soul vocals. During her time there, she joined the underground hip-hop scene and even sang on Prince’s album Plectrumelectrum. She attributes her transformation from vocalist to artist to her time with Prince.
Her most recent EP, Coconut Oil, produced by Grammy-nominated Ricky Reed and released under Atlantic Records, is a mixture of rap, gospel, electronic, and soul. She explores themes of body positivity and self care. It has been listed as number 14 in Rolling Stone’s 20 Best Pop Albums of 2016. The LA Times called Lizzo “a singer and rapper to watch in 2017.”
She is coming to Paradise Rock Club on Saturday, June 17th at 8:00 PM. This giveaway closes on Thursday, June 15th at 10:00 PM. Enter for a chance to win two tickets!
