Japanese Breakfast is the solo project of Michelle Zauner, who was previously the frontwoman of Little Big League. She began recording solo music after leaving Philadelphia for Eugene, Oregon, after her mother was diagnosed with cancer.
The name Japanese Breakfast stems from her Asian-American identity. She told Teen Vogue that she wanted to combine something “really American and well-known, like breakfast,” and something Americans associate with exoticism. Thus, she chose Japanese Breakfast (although true fans know she’s Korean-American).
Under her Japanese Breakfast alias, Zauner has released two albums: Psychopomp (2016) and Soft Sounds from Another Planet (2017). She has found a shoegaze pop sound that perfectly bolsters her profound lyricism.
She plays The Sinclair on Saturday, June 2nd at 8 PM, and we’re giving away two tickets! Fans of Mitski and Jay Som don’t want to miss this show. This giveaway closes Thursday, May 31st at 10 PM, so get your submission in soon!
