Nigerien singer-songwriter and guitarist Bombino is coming to The Sinclair on Saturday, March 16, and we’re giving away two tickets!
Omar “Bombino” Moctar was raised in a nomadic Tuareg encampment in Niger, surrounded by armed struggle and political conflict. His latest album Deran, however, focuses on the beauty of his African hometown instead of stereotypes of violence and religious extremism generally associated with the region. His first album recorded in Africa in 10 years, Deran is a vessel for Bombino to feel closer to home.
“You have to begin with the question of who you are,” he says in his bio. “You’re a Tuareg. With all the travels, all the experience of world, it’s as if I’m making myself remember where I come from. Where I come from will always be my home, my memory.”
Bombino is one of the most prominent players in the emerging North African desert blues genre. He has mastered the laid-back, yet complex, guitar style of Jimi Hendrix while adding Saharan flair and hip-swaying rhythms.
