Adrianne Lenker of Big Thief is coming to The Sinclair on Wednesday, February 13. We’re giving away two tickets—for you and your Valentine!
Lenker was raised into music: Her father taught her how to play guitar before she was 10. He found new teachers for her once she had advanced past his skills. In her early teens, he signed on as her manager and led her toward a successful pop career. However, after discovering Elliott Smith, Lenker decided she wasn’t making the type of music that she wanted to be making. She dropped the record she was recording with her father and went her own way.
For years she hustled in New York City to buy the things she needed to be a professional musician: electric guitar, amp, touring van. She met her future musical partner, Buck Meek, and they began touring as a duo until they met drummer Max Oleartchik and bassist James Krivchenia. The four formed Big Thief.
Adrianne Lenker released abysskiss in the latter part of 2018 as a follow-up to her first solo album released four years prior, before Big Thief’s formation. “My first solo record I made was Hours Were the Bird,” she said in a statement. “I had just turned 21 and moved to New York City where I was sleeping in a warehouse, working in a restaurant and photographing pigeons. Now five years later, another skin is being shed.”
This new album stems from her need to document her growth through living a nomadic lifestyle while touring. The album is an intimate and dream-like work of healing through introspection, as Lenker explores love and trauma through whispered folk-inspired indie passages.
