Indie-pop band The Marías played a transcendent show at MGM Music Hall in Boston as part of their Submarine tour. The band’s sophomore album, also called Submarine, was released in May of this year and was been highly anticipated since the release of the of the first single “Run Your Mouth”. Led by frontwoman Maria Zardoya, the band is known for writing music in both English and Spanish and their soft atmospheric jazzy sound.
Zardoya entered the stage silhouetted dramatically behind a blue orb, singing “Hamptons“, a song from the new record that features a lengthy synth instrumental over a bassy beat that builds throughout the song. Her presence on the stage was oozing a sauveness that was emphasized by her understated swaying dance moves and monochrome outfit. The stage setup featured a large minimal disc that was reminiscent of the band’s debut album cover. For the encore of the show, Zardoya sang from a clear bathtub on the back of the stage while half submerged in water, before climbing out to perform her last song dripping with water from the tub.
Putting on an elegant and stylish performance like this was the perfect match for the sound of their new record, a feat that some artists struggle to accomplish. The Marías have proven themselves a group that can effortlessly pull off a show that emphasizes their musical talents, rather than distract from it. The Submarine tour wraps up its US leg later this month, before continuing in Europe later in the fall.
