Concert Gallery: Raz Avaz and Armadi Tsayn

The sound of more than a dozen different instruments filled the Lilypad on Saturday night. But aside from the occasional cymbal roll and deep twang of the 6-string bass, the “classic” instruments of today’s (Western) bands were nowhere to be seen. Instead fans of Persian ensemble Raz Avaz and Armenian contemporary folk act Armadi Tsayn were treated to the sounds of centuries-old instruments like the kanun, oud, tar, doumbeg and kamancha. After both acts played their sets, the musicians joined together and packed themselves into the front of the room to perform a selection of songs—and a round of impressive solos.
