Touring in celebration of her October release, a little death, claire rousay played The Rockwell in Somerville.
The show opened with improviser Kelly Bray blending her trumpet and, at times, voice with a Hologram Microcosm granular effects pedal. The interplay between the acoustic trumpet playing and the processed signal showcased many unique loops, textures, and soundscapes.
Recordings of claire rousay’s music feel like they suck listeners into emotional vignettes, and her live performance accentuated these qualities. The set’s moments of tension, dynamics, and stillness were all the more enveloping. While the night was predominantly instrumental, a few tracks with prominent vocals like “it could be anything” and “lover’s spit plays in the background” from her 2024 release, sentiment, made it into the set as well.
