Zoya: Plugged In

Indian fusion artist Zoya Mohan does more than just make good music.

Sure, the Berklee College of Music alum has been featured in publications like Rolling Stone, The Huffington Post, and Earmilk for her musical talent, but it is the work that she does outside of the recording studio that will leave a lasting footprint from her stride.

The singer recently launched a musical project that hopes to raise awareness for the need for electricity of several schools in rural India. Called “Plugged In,” the project is a compilation remix album of her two albums The Girl Who Used To Live In My Room & Letters To Toskafeaturing the work of many talented producers. 100% of the proceeds from the project will go to improving the educational environments in Udipar, India.

The goal of the project is to raise $5,000 – enough money to provide 20 classrooms with light. In addition, money will go to providing fans and furniture to the schools to create a comfortable environment conducive to learning.

The Schools

Govt. Primary School
Suran Panchayat Jaswantgarh Panchayat Sameti Gogunda enrolls 55 students ages 6-12 years who walk here every day. There are 3 classrooms, one office, and one kitchen with no lights, fans, or electricity.

Khushiya Toy Library
Part of the MaitriMannthan N.G.O. in Udaipur, this center hosts over 100 children and women from the Billak Village who come to explore, read, and learn. However, the building has only three rooms, none of which contain any lights, electricity, or fans.

The Producers

1. Twistyknobs – Twistyknob’s remix of “Hold On” features delicious trap snares, crisp vocal chops and powerful sub kicks that flip the original on its head.

2. NuMind – NuMind’s remix of “Her Belly,” with its head-bobbing half-time rhythm, conjures images of racing down a dimly lit highway at night.

3. The Crateful Head – The drum ‘n’ bass remix of “Forgive & Forget” achieves the perfect balance between energy and serenity with its light pad synths and explosive drums.

4. Asteroids & Earthquakes – This remix of “Fire” has a groovy casual vibe to it that will have lovers of Flume and Hermitude hooked.

5. Icaro – Slick bass lines and dub-wubs are what give Icaro’s remix of “Willow” its evil Daft Punk/Pretty Lights feel.

6. Jade Cicada – The percussion and arpeggiated synths on this remix of “What’s Done Is Done,” is fit for a futuristic hookah lounge or cafe.

7. Smigonaut – As the most upbeat track of the album, Smigonaut’s remix of “Lunar Eclipsed” makes nice use of dynamic drums, riffs, and smooth vocal stabs.

8. He Will Add – “Take Me Back”‘s relaxed, summer-esque ballad will appeal to fans of Lana Del Rey and Lauren O’Connell.

9. CliffLight – Clifflight’s remix of “Letters to Toska” successfully bridges indie-rock with electronica, building on Zoya’s fluid vocals with a lively beat
