Weekly Wrap-Up: 8/21/16

Summer may be approaching its end, but that doesn’t mean music festival is over–yet. As we round up the latest local music news take a moment to peep the lineup of the sixth annual Jamaican Plain Music Festival, and keep an eye out for the new monthly concert series, B-Side Nights, at The Innovation and Design Building.

Revisit Camping as a Grown-Up

The Wild Honey Pie is holding a music-filled weekend in The Berkshires where you can hang out with friends and musicians alike. Welcome Campers is a summer camp getaway for adults who miss classic camping events like waterfront activities, dances, arts and crafts, and immediate bonding.

What separates this event from other adult camp weekends is that you get to share it with many artists including Palehound, Evolfo, and Calliope Musicals. Campers get to eat, bunk, and hang out with groups while reliving the irreplaceable, bug-filled days of childhood.

Tickets include lodging, food and access to music.

Cities and States Release New Song

Cities & States, born from his discovery of overdub recording, is John Richard’s solo project. He embodies every band role, eliminating the need for other members as he plays every instrument.

Cities & States’ new song “Ambulance Racer” is a solid effort: the timing of instruments and vocals are seamless, proving Richard’s ability to accompany himself. The siren-like solo connects the entire song with a cacophony of tones that exemplifies the chaos of ambulances. Richard’s voice and guitar work on “Ambulance Driver” is reminiscent of Arctic Monkey’s, though with a crafty nuance.

As it says on their Soundcloud, Cities & States provides “explosive pop music with restless legs,” which works out well for listeners who have restless ears and enjoy a variety of sound in their music.

Another Year Strong for Arlington Benefit Concert

Willstock, an annual benefit concert in Arlington, took place this past weekend. Young, local musicians performed as they have done since 2011, in support of Partners in Health, a healthcare group that provides access to help for residents in third world countries. The past three years have seen Willstock raise $2700 in support of Partners in Health.

Spread out over two days, the sixth Willstock featured current and past Arlington High School students playing everything from The Beatles to Lake Street Dive. Their lineup and videos are all posted here, conveniently edited into individual segments.

Make sure to catch them next year and check out their event page for updates.

JP Music Festival Line-up Announced

The Jamaica Plain Music Festival has announced their line-up for this year’s event in September. (We know we’re excited to catch old favorites like Tredici Bacci, Hallelujah the Hills, and Box of Birds as well as discover new local talent!) The all-ages, free festival near Jamaica Pond features two stages, local acts, and food trucks.

Groups from various genres will take the stage, “drawing upon the wide-ranging artistic community” that comes from JP or the surrounding area, piping the festival with a homegrown taste. It’s a celebration of the community and their artistic scene. Get excited for their sixth year with us as we eagerly count down to the JP Music Festival.
