Red Line Roots

Weekly Wrap-Up: 7/21/2014

It’s been a while; welcome back to our Weekly Wrap-Up column, your go-to for the latest local music news.

Not too many new releases out this week, but there were a number of great performances throughout the city. Here’s the rundown:

After a three-year hiatus, Massachusetts-based bluegrass band Crooked Still announced upcoming reunion concerts! The rootsy, five-piece group will return home to Boston for a three-night, weekend tour (at the Sinclair this coming November). If you’re hungry for a taste of their foot-tapping jams, check them out on Bandcamp; “Calvary” and “Ain’t No Grave” are enduring favorites.

With raw, grit-filled songs and a voice reminiscent of Janis Joplin, Boston’s Danielle Miraglia demanded the attention of Kendall Center’s audience this past Tuesday. Miraglia performed as part of Club Passim’s Summer Concert Series. Miraglia’s bluesy guitar and harmonica are sweeping through Boston! She’s performed at three other Boston venues this past week, her last appearance being aboard the Rock & Blues Concert Cruise.

Boston’s Grey Season hit up the Hat Shop on Newbury St. (Goorin Bro’s) with an acoustic set last Friday. The young musicians offered a fresh take on bluegrass, with strong crescendos on a makeshift drum set (why not trade a snare for a conga?) and driving mandolin solos. Let’s hope they keep up these funky annual performances. Don’t miss their next local show at the Middle East on July 29th!

Interested in the Passim’s Summer Concert Series? Check out Mark Whitaker tomorrow (7/22) @ Kendall Center and Damn Tall Buildings on Thursday (7/24) in Harvard Square.

That’s a Wrap!
