Ticket Giveaway: The Drums (11/14)

The Drums will perform at The Sinclair on Tuesday, November 14th at 8 PM. We have two tickets up for grabs!

Childhood friends Jonny Pierce and Jacob Graham formed the band in 2008. (They met at Bible camp when they were kids, and bonded over their mutual interest in music.) Eventually, Pierce (vocals) and Graham (synths) moved to Brooklyn together and found a guitarist and drummer to form a four-piece surf-rock group.

In 2009 and 2010, the band blew up. They were the most Shazamed band in 2009, and BBC listed them on their “Sound of 2010” list. They were named number one in both NME’s “New Music Tips For 2010” and Clash Magazine’s “Ones To Watch 2010.”

Pierce viewed his band as his new family after his real family, who was very religious, rejected him for being gay. However, a new member left after the release of each of their three albums. After the release of Encyclopedia in 2014, Graham announced that he would pursue his own musical career, leaving The Drums to Jonny Pierce alone. During this time, Pierce was also going through a painful divorce.

The Drums’ latest album sounds like another debut. Abysmal Thoughts, released as a solo act in June, departs from the band’s original surf rock sound to embrace more of an ‘80s-style pop sound. In an interview with PopMatters, he explains how his new musical style differs from his previous one: “I wasn’t singing about anything really. It was whimsical, beachy, escapist songs. I mean there were some personal subtlety in there and there was some autobiographical stuff, but for the most part, it was really generalized.” The new album is an inward glance into Pierce’s mental landscape as he reflects on his past self while moving in a new direction.

This giveaway closes Sunday, November 12th at 10 PM, so get your submission in soon! Fans of Alvvays and Cults don’t want to miss this show.
