Ticket Giveaway: Black Violin (4/22)

Hip-hop and classical music seem to be mutually exclusive forces in the music world, but Black Violin succeeds in tastefully combining these two disparate genres.

The duo is made up of violinist Kevin Marcus and violist Will B., who met at a performing arts high school in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Their fusion of hip-hop and classical music was a result of their musical surroundings: “We studied classical, but we lived rap music,” Marcus told PBS NewsHour. One of their main goals is to break stereotypes in the music world and beyond. An exchange Marcus had with a woman in an elevator, in which she assumed that he was not the type to play classical music, inspired the duo to name their most recent album Stereotypes.

Black Violin has performed for troops in Iraq, as well as for President Obama during the Kid’s Inaugural Ball. The duo has also performed with artists such as Kanye West, Alicia Keys, and Aerosmith. They have since gained widespread recognition from PBS and NPR.

They will be performing at Red Room at Cafe 939 on Saturday, April 22nd at 9:00 PM Fans of extreme genre bending will not want to miss it.
