Selected Sounds: 5 Must-See Acts at the Newport Folk Festival 2015

Folk lovers from around the world have flocked to Rhode Island’s legendary festival since 1959. Though the likes of Dylan, Seeger, and Cash no longer grace the stages on Newport Beach, this year’s lineup promises to be memorable. From well known acts like Roger Waters, The Decemberists, and Sufjan Stevens to newcomers Courtney Barnett or Hozier, the 2015 Newport Folk Festival should prove to be worth the trip. Check out which five acts we’re looking forward to this year!

Bahamas -Selected by Jonah

Canadian singer/songwriter Afie Jurvanen writes music that is extremely simple, minimal, and relaxing. I guess that’s why he goes by the name Bahamas. His stage show, however, is another beast, filled with his spot-on sarcastic humor, fiery guitar licks and tight grooves that will make everyone sway in the grass.

Honeysuckle -Selected by Matt M.

Converse Rubber Tracks has made a big splash in the Boston music scene over the past six months. Just last week they selected a handful of local acts, including Honeysuckle. They hit the stage early in the day on Friday, so don’t miss out! This progressive folk group  features two members from one of Sound of Boston’s favorites Grey Season along with phenomenal vocalist/guitarist/banjo player Holly McGarry.

Bela Fleck and Abigail Washburn -Selected by Anna

Usually when you hear the word “banjo”, you don’t find yourself leaping to turn up the volume. But this husband and wife duo takes the instrument to the next level, with classic staccato plucking and more fluid melodic riffs accompanying Washburn’s powerful vocals. Their chemistry is obviously also incredible–you don’t want to miss this set.

The Ballroom Thieves -Selected by Zoë

The Ballroom Thieves’ trajectory over the past two years has been a fascinating one to watch. Okay, so I may be a little biased– they were my first review for Sound of Boston. However, this band has come a long way since that show at the Sinclair in 2013, playing local music festivals such as Boston Calling and now the Newport Folk Festival. If you’re going, be sure not to miss the unique folk-rock blend that this group offers– they’ve got the perfect energy for a music festival without sacrificing any musical integrity.

Lord Huron -Selected by Beth

Newport will be chock full of talent, but don’t forget to take a break from sipping your summer shandy to catch Lord Huron’s set. Sunshine and open fields will be the perfect stage for their poetic lyrics and upbeat acoustic melodies.
