Sound of Boston is an online music publication that covers the culture, events and artists that comprise Boston’s vibrant music scene. Our city has a lot of talent to offer to the music world; our staff works to raise awareness of local acts and to help them to reach an audience.
All of our staff, including our founders, are volunteers who believe in supporting local music.

Staff Writer

Interested in becoming a music journalist? Ever wonder what it feels like to interview your favorite band or get a press pass to a concert? We are looking for new writers to join our writing staff and help shine the spotlight on the local talent of the Boston music scene. Candidates should be graduates or undergraduates with a passion for music. This part-time position is unpaid and remote.

Responsibilities:

  • Create content related to the local music scene—be it covering shows, writing album reviews, or other features
  • Must be responsive and receptive to feedback and edits
  • Interview and profile local artists
  • Regularly communicate with editors regarding assigned stories and availability

Desired Skills:

  • Relevant studies or work experience
  • Basic understanding of WordPress
  • Strong research and analytical skills
  • Photography skills are a plus, although not required

Editor

Candidates should be undergraduates or graduates with experience in copyediting and a passion for music. This part-time position is unpaid and remote.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide feedback to writer in a timely manner
  • Report to Managing Editor and Editor in Chief
  • Proofread posts for style, grammar, and content

Desired Skills:

  • Working towards or holding a degree in English or related field
  • Knowledge of AP Style
  • Experience copyediting
  • Basic knowledge of WordPress

Social Media Coordinator

Candidates should be undergraduates or graduates with social media expertise and a passion for music. This part-time position is unpaid and remote.

Responsibilities:

  • Posting daily to Sound of Boston’s social media platforms
  • Monitor Twitter account and local music news
  • Schedule weekly posts (#TBT, #FF) and tweets for local band shows
  • Work with Promotions Coordinator during contests/giveaways

Desired Skills:

  • Familiarity with Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram
  • Basic understanding of WordPress
  • Strong writing and grammar skills
  • Ability to represent the Sound of Boston brand and engage our audience

Press Credential Coordinator

Candidates should be undergraduates or graduates with a passion for music. This part-time position is unpaid and remote.

Responsibilities:

  • Secure press credentials for staff writers and photographers
  • Manage existing relationships with press contacts, record labels, artist management companies
  • Communicate with and update appropriate team members when necessary

Desired Skills:

  • Enthusiasm for exploring the music industry field
  • A high level of email professionalism and an attention to detail
  • Strong organizational skills

Graphic Designer

Candidates should be undergraduates or graduates with a passion for music. This part-time position is unpaid and remote.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and create graphic material for promotional purposes (concerts, album art, etc.)
  • Updating marketing materials
  • Communicate with editors and pitch project ideas 

Desired Skills:

  • Experience designing for print or web
  • Familiar with Adobe Creative Suite
  • Photography skills are a plus, although not required
